Uri TauberandRyan Mercado a2f2eea79e perf: Optimize fillRectDither with Byte-Aligned fillRectImpl (#2270)
## Summary

* **What is the goal of this PR?**
Replace the pixel-by-pixel `fillRectDither` implementation with a new
byte-aligned `fillRectImpl` that eliminates per-pixel
`rotateCoordinates` calls and Read-Modify-Write bitwise loops, yielding
a significant rendering speedup on ESP32 E-ink framebuffers.

Ported from @rhythmerc's crosspoint-reader fork commit 27ea625.

* **What changes are included?**

- **`GfxRenderer.cpp` — `fillRectDither` refactor:** The existing
`if/else if` chain is replaced with a `switch` statement that delegates
each `Color` case to the new `fillRectImpl<Color>()` template,
eliminating runtime branching.

- **`GfxRenderer.cpp` — new `fillRectImpl<C>()` template:** Core of the
optimization. Key behaviors:
    - Clips the rectangle in logical space upfront.
- Rotates only **2 opposing corner points** (top-left and bottom-right)
into physical framebuffer space instead of rotating every pixel
individually.
- Derives physical-space `byteStart`/`byteEnd` and precomputes
`headMask` / `tailMask` for MSB-first partial-byte boundaries,
performing RMW only on the edge bytes.
- **Solid fills (`Black` / `White`):** Uses `memset` for all interior
full-byte runs per row — no per-pixel writes.
- **Dithered fills (`LightGray` / `DarkGray`):** Precomputes both parity
variants of `blackMask` (even/odd `py`) **outside** the row loop,
eliminating the previously re-evaluated 8-bit construction loop on every
physical row. Interior full bytes are then written with a single
`memset(whiteMask)`.
- Uses `if constexpr` throughout to dispatch on `Color` at compile time,
generating zero runtime branches per template instantiation.

- **`GfxRenderer.h`:** Declares the new private `fillRectImpl<Color>()`
template method with an explanatory doc-comment.

- **Explicit template instantiations** added for all four active `Color`
variants (`Black`, `White`, `LightGray`, `DarkGray`).

## Additional Context

* **Performance:** The primary motivation is ESP32 E-ink framebuffer
performance. The old path called `rotateCoordinates` and did a full RMW
for every single pixel in the rectangle. The new path calls
`rotateCoordinates` exactly **twice** per fill regardless of rectangle
size, then operates at byte granularity — a complexity reduction from
O(W×H) coordinate transforms to O(1).
* **Dither correctness:** The `blackMask` precomputation relies on the
dither pattern having period 2 in both logical X and Y, which makes the
per-row byte pattern repeat with period 2 in `py`. Reviewers should
verify the `lxBase`/`lyBase` derivations for all four orientations
(`Portrait`, `PortraitInverted`, `LandscapeClockwise`,
`LandscapeCounterClockwise`) match the inverse of `rotateCoordinates`.
* **Edge case — single-byte rows:** When `byteStart == byteEnd`, the
head and tail masks are ANDed together into a single `rectMask` to avoid
double-masking the same byte. This path should be tested with narrow
rectangles (width < 8px).
* **No behavioral change for `Color::Clear`:** The `Clear` case exits
early via `if constexpr` and is a no-op, matching the original behavior.

Justin Mitchell f6e59aab72 feat: Add displayGrayscaleBase method for differential refresh
(#2334)

Introduces a new display method that prepares the framebuffer as a base
frame for grayscale overlays. On X3 panels, this uses the OEM
differential base waveform (AA-pre-BW) without forcing a resync. Other
panels fall back to normal display with configurable refresh mode.

Uri Tauber db94a86fba fix: Skip Underline Calculations During Font Cache Scan Pass (#2237)
## Summary

This PR optimizes the text rendering process by skipping underline style
calculations and measurements during the initial font cache scanning
phase. This prevents excessive and unnecessary SD card reads on pages
with heavy use of underlines (e.g., Table of Contents pages).

### **The Problem**

During the first rendering pass (the font cache scan pass used to
collect text for prewarming), `GfxRenderer::drawText()` early-returns
after recording text as expected. However, `TextBlock::render()`
continued past this point to execute the underline decoration logic.

Because underline calculation calls `getTextWidth()` and
`getTextAdvanceX()`, it triggered immediate glyph lookups via
`EpdFont::getGlyph()`. Since the SD card font had not been prewarmed yet
at this stage, the lookups fell back to the `glyphMissHandler`,
resulting in hundreds of individual, slow SD card reads into a limited
8-slot ring buffer.

### **The Fix**

1. **Exposed Scan State:** Added `GfxRenderer::isFontCacheScanning()` to
safely check if the font cache manager is currently in
text-collection/scan mode.
2. **Bypassed Underline Logic:** Modified `TextBlock::render()` to check
this state and skip underline measurement and drawing entirely while
scanning is active.

> [!NOTE]
> The text itself is still properly captured for prewarming via
`drawText()`. The underlines will be safely and efficiently calculated
and drawn during the actual render pass after the fonts have been
completely prewarmed.

Jeremy Klein 4ee406897b feat: tiled grayscale rendering to drop the storeBwBuffer peak (#2106)
Tiled grayscale rendering to drop the storeBwBuffer peak largest
contiguous free block (the value that actually drives OOM on the C3)
from ~114 KB to ~82-90 KB.

This renders each grayscale plane band-by-band into a small (~8 KB)
scratch and
streams each band straight to controller RAM (community-sdk
writeGrayscalePlaneStrip), leaving the BW framebuffer intact. No save,
no
restore; controller RAM is re-synced for the next differential turn
directly
from the live framebuffer.

Three writers honor the active band target so per-band re-rendering
stays cheap
and correct:

- drawPixel (text) redirects writes to the band scratch and clips to it.
- renderCharImpl skips glyphs whose physical y-extent is outside the
band before
the bitmap decode (glyphIntersectsStrip), so the per-band re-render
doesn't
  pay N x glyph decode.
- DirectPixelWriter (images) writes the band scratch via getWriteTarget
instead
  of the framebuffer. Without this, image pixels wrote the live BW frame
directly and cleanup re-synced that corruption, leaving thin outlines
after
  navigating away from an image.

Controller specifics live in the SDK (X4 setRamArea windowing, X3 PTL);
the
reader checks supportsStripGrayscale() and is otherwise
controller-agnostic.

Measured on hardware (X4 and X3, text and images, visually correct):

- Grayscale scratch ~8 KB vs ~50 KB save; largest contiguous free block
held at
  full size during grayscale instead of dropping ~25-32 KB.
- X4 text page about +25 ms/page; X3 page time is dominated by its
intrinsic
  grayscale refresh, not tiling.

Depends on community-sdk #13 (the writeGrayscalePlaneStrip API). The
submodule
bump here points at that branch, so until #13 merges the submodule won't
resolve
from upstream and CI will fail there; keeping this a draft until then.
Will
rebase onto master and re-point the submodule to the merged SDK commit
once #13
lands.

Jeremy Klein a14c8e762d perf: shrink HomeActivity cover cache from 48KB framebuffer to 16KB region (#2035)
On-device repro showed the cover snapshot pinning ~52KB of contiguous
heap (cloning the full 48KB framebuffer with malloc overhead). MaxAlloc
on Home was 61KB; nothing was leaving headroom for HTTPS, which needs
30-50KB contiguous for the mbedTLS handshake.

Add region-aware framebuffer helpers to GfxRenderer that translate a
logical rect through rotateCoordinates and copy only the byte range that
contains the rotated rect. HomeActivity records the tile rect it passes
to drawRecentBookCover and caches only that subregion.

Measured on device (X3, Portrait):

  Idle on Home    | Free 102K -> 139K  | MaxAlloc 61K -> 115K
  Mid-EPUB-read   | Free  81K -> 134K  | MaxAlloc 70K -> 115K
  Cover cache     |        ~52K -> ~16K (per allocation)

Works in all four orientations because the bounds helper samples the
four logical corners through the existing rotation, so the cached byte
range always covers the pixels the theme could have drawn into.

Savings will vary with theme, but should be significant across all.

Zach NelsonandJustin Mitchell b186529120 fix: Prepare SD card font caches from txt reader (#1973)
## Summary

SD card font fixes:
- `TxtReaderActivity` needs to call `renderer.ensureSdCardFontReady` to
build the advance lookup table to support rendering with SD card fonts.
This revealed that `TxtReaderActivity` was inconsistently performing
layout with `getTextWidth`, when the renderer actually uses
`getTextAdvanceX`, which can lead to minor inconsistencies in alignment.
- Avoid allocating one big `allText` string in
`ParsedText::layoutAndExtractLines`. Instead, pass the vector of word
strings directly to `SdCardFont::buildAdvanceTable`, where the algorithm
just needs to iterate codepoints anyway.

7993b2bb97 feat: add SD card font support with on-device download and web management
Add a complete SD card font subsystem that enables users to install and
use custom fonts beyond the three built-in families. This combines the
back-end firmware support (#1327) with the font configuration, build
pipeline, CI distribution, and user-facing management UI (#1392).

Core font system:
- Custom .cpfont binary format (v4) with multi-style support (regular,
  bold, italic, bold-italic) packed into a single file per size
- On-demand glyph loading from SD card with two-pass prewarm rendering
  to bulk-read glyphs per page, achieving near-flash performance for
  Latin text (~697ms vs ~681ms) and viable CJK rendering (~32% slower)
- Persistent advance cache for layout measurement without SD I/O
- Overflow ring buffer for glyph cache misses during rendering
- Memory-conscious design: only advance tables kept in RAM; glyph
  bitmaps, kern tables, and ligatures loaded on demand from SD

Font management:
- On-device WiFi download from GitHub Releases with manifest-based
  discovery, install/update detection, and progress UI
- Web interface font upload, listing, and deletion via /fonts page
- Manual SD card copy to /fonts/ or /.fonts/ directories
- Font selection integrated into Settings > Reader > Font Family

Build pipeline:
- Declarative YAML config (sd-fonts.yaml) as single source of truth
  for the 17-family font library (serif, sans, mono, accessibility)
- Python converter (fontconvert_sdcard.py) for TTF/OTF to .cpfont with
  FreeType rasterization, class-based kerning, and ligature extraction
- Parallel build orchestrator with variable font instance extraction
- CI workflow publishing versioned + stable releases to a dedicated
  crosspoint-fonts repository with auto-incrementing revision tags
- Centralized version constants (cpfont_version.py) shared across
  build tooling and CI, with firmware headers as manual sync points

Additional fixes:
- CJK characters no longer get hyphens inserted at line breaks
- Advance table eliminates 30+ second stalls during CJK section
  indexing for paragraphs with >512 unique codepoints

Zach NelsonandUri Tauber 075ad7d021 fix: Use font metrics for combining mark positioning (#1310)
## Summary

**What is the goal of this PR?** (e.g., Implements the new feature for
file uploading.)

Combining diacritical marks (U+0300–U+036F) were positioned using a
heuristic that centered them at the midpoint of the base glyph's
**advance width**. This worked acceptably for Bookerly but produced
visibly off-center marks for Noto Sans due to a fundamental difference
in how the two fonts design their combining mark metrics.

Builds on the work of #1037.

## The problem

The two built-in body fonts encode combining mark `left` offsets with
very different conventions:

| U+0302 (circumflex) | -5 | -5 |
| U+0323 (dot below) | -2 | -11 |

Noto Sans uses large negative `left` values because its marks are
designed for placement at the post-advance cursor position, with `left`
pulling the bitmap back over the base glyph. Bookerly uses small offsets
because its marks sit closer to the glyph origin. The old `advance/2`
centering split the difference poorly — it happened to land close to
correct for Bookerly but placed Noto Sans marks roughly 6px left of
center on a typical lowercase letter.

There was also a bug in the vertical gap heuristic. It unconditionally
computed a `raiseBy` value to prevent above-baseline marks from
colliding with tall base glyphs, but it applied the same logic to
**below-baseline** marks like cedilla (U+0327), dot below (U+0323), and
ogonek (U+0328). For those marks, the math produced a large positive
raise (e.g., 24px for dot-below on 'a'), launching them above the
x-height instead of keeping them below the baseline.

## The fix

**Horizontal positioning**: Instead of centering at `advance/2`, align
the mark bitmap's visual midpoint directly over the base glyph bitmap's
visual midpoint. This uses the base glyph's actual `left` and `width`
rather than its advance width, producing correct results regardless of
how the font encodes its mark offsets.

**Vertical positioning**: The raise heuristic now checks `markTop -
markHeight > 0` and skips below-baseline marks entirely, leaving them at
their font-designed position.

**Consolidation**: The shared math is extracted into two `constexpr`
helpers (`combiningMark::centerOver` and
`combiningMark::raiseAboveBase`) in `EpdFontData.h`, eliminating the
previously triplicated inline calculations across `drawText`,
`drawTextRotated90CW`, and `getTextBounds`. The `MIN_COMBINING_GAP_PX`
constant is also centralized as `combiningMark::MIN_GAP_PX`.

Justinian 825ef56ad8 feat: X3 grayscale antialiasing improvements (#1607)
## Summary
Improves text antialiasing quality on the Xteink X3 (SSD1677) display to
bring it closer to X4 rendering quality. Addresses white lines through
letter strokes and ghosting artifacts during page turns and screen
transitions.

## Changes

### Display Driver (open-x4-sdk)
- Dedicated X3 grayscale LUTs with tuned VDL drive strengths for dark
gray (2 time units) and light gray (3 time units), with active GND hold
on non-gray transitions to prevent floating source crosstalk
- Tight scan timing: TP2/TP3 reduced to 1 (total gate-on 7 units vs 17),
minimizing parasitic charge leakage that caused white lines through
letter strokes
- Fast diff BB reinforcement: Added mild VDH reinforcing pulse to
lut_x3_bb_full so black pixels are actively driven during differential
refreshes, clearing gray residue/ghosting
- displayGrayBuffer() updated to use the dedicated gray LUT bank instead
of full refresh LUTs for X3

### Rendering Pipeline
- Re-enabled light gray rendering for X3 text and images, now safe with
dedicated gray LUTs providing proper 4-level gray
- Removed isLightGrayRestricted() gating that was limiting X3 to 3-level
gray
- Runtime display dimensions in DirectPixelWriter and ScreenshotUtil,
replaced hardcoded constants with runtime getters to support X3 792x528
resolution

### Note
The open-x4-sdk submodule references a commit on
juicecultus/community-sdk. A corresponding PR to
open-x4-epaper/community-sdk should be merged first so the submodule ref
resolves on upstream.

## Testing
Tested on physical X3 hardware. White lines through letters
significantly reduced, in-book ghosting improved via BB reinforcement,
antialiasing visually closer to X4 quality.

Zach Nelson 1398aeb1ed fix: Use differential rounding for consistent inter-glyph spacing (#1413)
## Summary

**What is the goal of this PR?**

A tweak to the fixed-point x-advance and kerning calculations to ensure
that the spacing between any two glyphs is always calculated
consistently.

I noticed that sometimes I'd see common character pairs like "oo" more
than once on a page, and the distance between the two snapped to
different pixels depending on the running accumulated error for the line
of text.

This change uses a differential rounding approach where each glyph's
x-advance plus the kerning relative to the next glyph are combined in
fixed-point precision, then snapped to a pixel to draw the next glyph.
This results in a consistent inter-glyph spacing any time the same two
glyphs show up adjacent to each other, regardless of the accumulated
error across the line.

Justin Mitchell 9b3885135f feat: Initial support for the x3 (#875)
## Summary

Adds Xteink X3 hardware support to CrossPoint Reader. The X3 uses the
same SSD1677 e-ink controller as the X4 but with a different panel
(792x528 vs 800x480), different button layout, and an I2C fuel gauge
(BQ27220) instead of ADC-based battery reading.

All X3-specific behavior is gated by runtime device detection — X4
behavior is unchanged.

Depends on community-sdk X3 support: open-x4-epaper/community-sdk#19
(merged).

## Changes

### HAL Layer

**HalGPIO** (`lib/hal/HalGPIO.cpp/.h`)
- I2C-based device fingerprinting at boot: probes for BQ27220 fuel
gauge, DS3231 RTC, and QMI8658 IMU to distinguish X3 from X4
- Detection result cached in NVS for fast subsequent boots
- Exposes `deviceIsX3()` / `deviceIsX4()` helpers used throughout the
codebase
- X3 button mapping (7 GPIOs vs X4's layout)
- USB connection detection and wake classification for X3

**HalDisplay** (`lib/hal/HalDisplay.cpp/.h`)
- Calls `einkDisplay.setDisplayX3()` before init when X3 is detected
- Requests display resync after power button / flash wake events
- Runtime display dimension accessors (`getDisplayWidth()`,
`getDisplayHeight()`, `getBufferSize()`)

**HalPowerManager** (`lib/hal/HalPowerManager.cpp/.h`)

### Display & Rendering

Adrian Wilkins-Caruana f1e9dc7f30 perf: font-compression improvements (#1056)
## Purpose

This PR includes some preparatory changes that are needed for an
upcoming performant CJK font feature. The changes have no impact on
render time and heap allocation for latin text. **Despite this, I think
these changes stand on their own as a better font
compression/decompression implementation.**

## Summary

- Font decompressor rewrite: Replaced the 4-slot LRU group cache with a
two-tier system — a page buffer (glyphs prewarmed before rendering
begins) and a hot-group fallback (last decompressed group retained for
non-prewarmed
  glyphs). 
- Byte-aligned compressed bitmap format: Glyph bitmaps within compressed
groups are now stored row-padded rather than tightly packed before
DEFLATE compression, improving compression ratios by making identical
pixel rows produce
identical byte patterns. Glyphs are compacted back to packed format on
demand at render time. Reduces flash size by 155 KB.
- Page prewarm system: Added `Page::collectText` and
`Page::getDominantStyle` to extract per-style glyph requirements before
rendering, and `GfxRenderer::prewarmFontCache` to pre-decompress only
the groups needed for the dominant style
   — eliminating mid-render decompression for the common case.
- UTF-8 robustness fixes: `utf8NextCodepoint` now validates continuation
bytes and returns a replacement glyph on malformed input;
`ChapterHtmlSlimParser` correctly preserves incomplete multi-byte
sequences across word-buffer flush
  boundaries rather than splitting them.

Zach Nelson 32a5c1c358 fix: Fix inter-word spacing rounding error in text layout (#1311)
## Summary

**What is the goal of this PR?**

### Problem

Inter-word gap widths were computed as two separately-snapped integers:

```cpp
gap = getSpaceWidth(fontId, style);                        // fp4::toPixel(spaceAdvance)
gap += getSpaceKernAdjust(fontId, leftCp, rightCp, style); // fp4::toPixel(kern1 + kern2)
```

Because `fp4::toPixel(a) + fp4::toPixel(b)` can differ from
`fp4::toPixel(a + b)` by +/-1 pixel when the fractional parts straddle a
rounding boundary, each inter-word space could be one pixel wider or
narrower than the correct value. This affected line-break width
decisions and word-position accumulation across the whole paragraph
layout pipeline.

### Fix

Replaces `getSpaceKernAdjust()` with `getSpaceAdvance(fontId, leftCp,
rightCp, style)`, which combines the space glyph advance and both
flanking kern values (`kern(leftCp, ' ')` + `kern(' ', rightCp)`) into a
single fixed-point sum before the snap:

```cpp
return fp4::toPixel(spaceAdvanceFP + kern(leftCp, ' ') + kern(' ', rightCp));
```

This is the same single-snap pattern already used by `getTextAdvanceX`
for word widths.

### Changes

- **`GfxRenderer`**: Replaces `getSpaceKernAdjust()` with
`getSpaceAdvance()`. `getSpaceWidth()` is retained for the
single-space-word case in `measureWordWidth` where no adjacent-word kern
context is available.
- **`ParsedText`**: All four call sites (`computeLineBreaks`,
`computeHyphenatedLineBreaks`, and both loops in `extractLine`) updated
to use `getSpaceAdvance()`. The now-redundant `spaceWidth`
pre-computation and parameter are removed from all three internal layout
functions.

Zach Nelson 7dc518624c fix: Use fixed-point fractional x-advance and kerning for better text layout (#1168)
## Summary

**What is the goal of this PR?**

Hopefully fixes #1182.

_Note: I think letterforms got a "heavier" appearance after #1098, which
makes this more noticeable. The current version of this PR reverts the
change to add `--force-autohint` for Bookerly, which to me seems to
bring the font back to a more aesthetic and consistent weight._

#### Problem

Character spacing was uneven in certain words. The word "drew" in
Bookerly was the clearest example: a visible gap between `d` and `r`,
while `e` and `w` appeared tightly condensed. The root cause was
twofold:

1. **Integer-only glyph advances.** `advanceX` was stored as a `uint8_t`
of whole pixels, sourced from FreeType's hinted `advance.x` (which
grid-fits to integers). A glyph whose true advance is 15.56px was stored
as 16px -- an error of +0.44px per character that compounds across a
line.

2. **Floor-rounded kerning.** Kern adjustments were converted with
`math.floor()`, which systematically over-tightened negative kerns. A
kern of -0.3px became -1px -- a 0.7px over-correction that visibly
closed gaps.

Combined, these produced the classic symptom: some pairs too wide,
others too tight, with the imbalance varying per word.

#### Solution: fixed-point accumulation with 1/16-pixel resolution, for
sub-pixel precision during text layout

All font metrics now use a "fixed-point 4" format -- 4 fractional bits
giving 1/16-pixel (0.0625px) resolution. This is implemented with plain
integer arithmetic (shifts and adds), requiring no floating-point on the
ESP32.

**How it works:**

A value like 15.56px is stored as the integer `249`:

```
249 = 15 * 16 + 9    (where 9/16 = 0.5625, closest to 0.56)
```

Two storage widths share the same 4 fractional bits:

Because both have 4 fractional bits, they add directly into a single
`int32_t` accumulator during layout. The accumulator is only snapped to
the nearest whole pixel at the moment each glyph is rendered:

Fractional remainders carry forward indefinitely. Rounding errors stay
below +/- 0.5px and never compound.

#### Concrete example: "drew" in Bookerly

**Before** (integer advances, floor-rounded kerning):

Spacing is now `0, 1, 0` pixels -- nearly uniform. Verified on-device:
all 5 copies of "drew" in the test EPUB produce identical spacing,
confirming zero accumulator drift.

- Use `linearHoriAdvance` (FreeType 16.16, unhinted) instead of
`advance.x` (26.6, grid-fitted to integers) for glyph advances
- Encode kern values as 4.4 fixed-point with `round()` instead of
`floor()`
- Add `fp4_from_ft16_16()` and `fp4_from_design_units()` helper
functions
- Add module-level documentation of fixed-point conventions

**Font data structures (`EpdFontData.h`)**
- `EpdGlyph::advanceX`: `uint8_t` to `uint16_t` (no memory cost due to
existing struct padding)
- Add `fp4` namespace with `constexpr` helpers: `fromPixel()`,
`toPixel()`, `toFloat()`
- Document fixed-point conventions

**Font API (`EpdFont.h/cpp`, `EpdFontFamily.h/cpp`)**
- `getKerning()` return type: `int8_t` to `int` (to avoid truncation of
the 4.4 value)

**Rendering (`GfxRenderer.cpp`)**
- `drawText()`: replace integer cursor with `int32_t` fixed-point
accumulator
- `drawTextRotated90CW()`: same accumulator treatment for vertical
layout
- `getTextAdvanceX()`, `getSpaceWidth()`, `getSpaceKernAdjust()`,
`getKerning()`: convert from fixed-point to pixel at API boundary

**Regenerated all built-in font headers** with new 12.4 advances and 4.4
kern values.

#### Memory impact

Zero additional RAM. The `advanceX` field grew from `uint8_t` to
`uint16_t`, but the `EpdGlyph` struct already had 1 byte of padding at
that position, so the struct size is unchanged. The fixed-point
accumulator is a single `int32_t` on the stack.

#### Test plan

- I am not a typography expert. 
- The implementation has been reworked from the earlier version, so it
is no longer necessary to omit Open Dyslexic, and kerning data now
covers all fonts, styles, and codepoints for which we include bitmap
data.
- Claude Opus 4.6 helped with a lot of this.
- There's an included test epub document with lots of kerning and
ligature examples, shown in the photos.

Uri Tauber ca89e41636 fix: Crash (Load access fault) when indexing chapters containing characters unsupported by bold/italic font variants (#997)
## Summary

* **What is the goal of this PR?** 

I flashed the last revision before commit f1740dbe, and chapter indexing
worked without any crashes.
After applying f1740dbe, the same chapter consistently triggered a
device reboot during indexing.

The affected chapter contains inline equation images surrounded by
styled (bold/italic) text that includes special math/symbol characters.

## Additional Context

Prior to f1740dbe, both `getTextAdvanceX()` and `getSpaceWidth()` always
measured text using `EpdFontFamily::REGULAR`, regardless of the actual
style.

Commit f1740dbe improved correctness by passing the active style so
spacing is calculated using the actual bold/italic font variant.

However, bold and italic variants have narrower Unicode coverage than
the regular font. When a character exists in the regular font but not in
the selected styled variant, `pdFont::getGlyph()` returns `nullptr`.

The updated measurement functions did not check for this and immediately
dereferenced the pointer:

`width += font.getGlyph(cp, style)->advanceX;   // nullptr->advanceX`


Because `advanceX` is located at byte offset 2 within `EpdGlyph`,
dereferencing a null pointer caused the CPU to attempt a load from
address `0x00000002`, resulting in a RISC-V:
Load access fault
MCAUSE = 5
MTVAL = 2


## Fix

Added null-safety checks to both `getTextAdvanceX()` and
`getSpaceWidth()`, following the same pattern used in the rendering
path:

If the glyph is missing in the selected style → fall back to the
replacement glyph.

If the replacement glyph is also unavailable → treat the character as
zero-width.

This preserves the improved style-correct spacing while preventing
crashes.
No behavioral changes occur for characters that are supported by the
selected font variant.

Zach Nelson 448a77f02b perf: Remove hasPrintableChars pass (#971)
## Summary

`hasPrintableChars` does a pass over text before rendering. It looks up
glyphs in the font and measures dimensions, returning early if the text
results in zero size.

This additional pass doesn't offer any benefit over moving straight to
rendering the text, because the rendering loop already gracefully
handles missing glyphs. This change saves an extra pass over all
rendered text.

Note that both `hasPrintableChars` and `renderChar` replace missing
glyphs with `glyph = getGlyph(REPLACEMENT_GLYPH)`, so there's no
difference for characters which are not present in the font.

Zach Nelson f1740dbe1e fix: Correct word width and space calculations (#963)

This change fixes an issue I noticed while reading where occasionally,
especially in italics, some words would have too much space between
them. The problem was that word width calculations were including any
negative X overhang, and combined with a space before the word, that can

This PR further reduce ~25ms from rendering time, testing inside the
Setting screen:

## Details

This PR based on the fact that function calls are costly if the function
is small enough. For example, this simple call:

This adds ~10 instructions just to prepare the registers prior to the
function call, plus some more instructions for the function's
epilogue/prologue. Inlining it removing all of these:

Of course, this optimization is not magic. It's only beneficial under 3
conditions:
- The function is small, not in size, but in terms of effective
instructions. For example, the `rotateCoordinates` is simply a jump
table, where each branch is just 3-4 inst
- The function has multiple input arguments, which requires some move to
put it onto the correct place
- The function is called very frequently (i.e. critical path)

computations. A single pixel needs around 20 instructions just to know

The goal of this PR is to deliver a fix for or at least mitigate the
impact of the issue described in #561

This PR includes a new option "Sunlight Fading Fix" under "Settings ->
Display".

When set to ON, we will disable the displays analog supply voltage after
every update and turn it back on before the next update.

## Additional Context

* Until now, I was only able to do limited testing because of limited
sunlight at my location, but the fix seems to be working. I'll also
attach a pre-built binary based on 0.16.0 (current master) with the fix
applied to the linked ticket, as building this fix is a bit annoying
because the submodule open-x4-sdk also needs an update.
* [PR in
open-x4-sdk](https://github.com/open-x4-epaper/community-sdk/pull/15)
needs to be merged first, we also need to add another commit to this
here PR, updating this dependency.
* I decided to hide this behind a default-OFF option. While I'm not
really concerned that this fix might potentially damage the display,
someone more knowledgeable on E-Ink technology could maybe have a look
at this.
* There's a binary attached in the linked issue, if someone has the
required sunlight to test this in-depth.

features/components in CrossPoint only need to be developed for the
"Classic" BaseTheme.
- Additional themes can easily be developed by the community using this
foundation

- Only the Home, Library and main Settings screens have been implemented
so far, this will be extended to the transfer screens and chapter
selection screen later on, but we need to get the ball rolling somehow
:)
- Loading extra covers on the home screen in the Lyra theme takes a
little more time (about 2 seconds), I added a loading bar popup (reusing
the Indexing progress bar from the reader view, factored into a neat UI
component) but the popup adds ~400ms to the loading time.
- ~~Home screen thumbnails will need to be generated separately for each
theme, because they are displayed in different sizes. Because we're
using dithering, displaying a thumb with the wrong size causes the
picture to look janky or dark as it does on the screenshots above. No
worries this will be fixed in a future PR.~~ Thumbs are now generated
with a size parameter
- UI Icons will need to be implemented in a future PR.

Jake Kenneally 2cf799f45b feat: Add CSS parsing and CSS support in EPUBs (#411)
## Summary

* **What is the goal of this PR?**

- Adds basic CSS parsing to EPUBs and determine the CSS rules when
rendering to the screen so that text is styled correctly. Currently
supports bold, underline, italics, margin, padding, and text alignment

## Additional Context

- My main reason for wanting this is that the book I'm currently
reading, Carl's Doomsday Scenario (2nd in the Dungeon Crawler Carl
series), relies _a lot_ on styled text for telling parts of the story.
When text is bolded, it's supposed to be a message that's rendered
"on-screen" in the story. When characters are "chatting" with each
other, the text is bolded and their names are underlined. Plus, normal
emphasis is provided with italicizing words here and there. So, this
greatly improves my experience reading this book on the Xteink, and I
figured it was useful enough for others too.
- For transparency: I'm a software engineer, but I'm mostly frontend and
TypeScript/JavaScript. It's been _years_ since I did any C/C++, so I
would not be surprised if I'm doing something dumb along the way in this
code. Please don't hesitate to ask for changes if something looks off. I
heavily relied on Claude Code for help, and I had a lot of inspiration
from how [microreader](https://github.com/CidVonHighwind/microreader)
achieves their CSS parsing and styling. I did give this as good of a
code review as I could and went through everything, and _it works on my
machine_ 😄

Maeve AndrewsandMaeve Andrews 51c5c3c0aa fix: rotate origin in drawImage (#557)
## Summary

This was originally a comment in #499, but I'm making it its own PR,
because it doesn't depend on anything there and then I can base that PR
on this one.

Currently, `drawBitmap` is used for covers and sleep wallpaper, and
`drawImage` is used for the boot logo. `drawBitmap` goes row by row and
pixel by pixel, so it respects the renderer orientation. `drawImage`
just calls the `EInkDisplay`'s `drawImage`, which works in the eink
panel's native display orientation.

`drawImage` rotates the x,y coordinates where it's going to draw the
image, but doesn't account for the fact that the northwest corner in
portrait orientation becomes, the southwest corner of the image
rectangle in the native orientation. The boot and sleep activities
currently work around this by calculating the north*east* corner of
where the image should go, which becomes the northwest corner after
`rotateCoordinates`.

I think this wasn't really apparent because the CrossPoint logo is
rotationally symmetrical. The `EInkDisplay` `drawImage` always draws the
image in native orientation, but that looks the same for the "X" image.

If we rotate the origin coordinate in `GfxRenderer`'s `drawImage`, we
can use a much clearer northwest corner coordinate in the boot and sleep
activities. (And then, in #499, we can actually rotate the boot screen
to the user's preferred orientation).

This does *not* yet rotate the actual bits in the image; it's still
displayed in native orientation. This doesn't affect the
rotationally-symmetric logo, but if it's ever changed, we will probably
want to allocate a new `u8int[]` and transpose rows and columns if
necessary.

## Additional Context

I've created an additional branch on top of this to demonstrate by
replacing the logo with a non-rotationally-symmetrical image:

The current behavior of rendering `?` for an unknown Unicode character
can be hard to distinguish from a typo. Use the standard Unicode
"replacement character" instead, that's what it's designed for:
