Justin Mitchell ebebc6f202 chore: migrate from open-x4-sdk to freeink-sdk (#2449)
This PR moves us from the xteink openx4 SDK to the freeink sdk from
https://freeink.org. Out of the box there are NO changes needed in the
firmware to support this swap, it all magically works as is. However as
we support more than just the x3/x4 devices, this sdk allows us to pass
env vars into the build commands to include support for other devices.
As support for new hardware such as touch screens and bluetooth are
added the xteink builds decide at compile time if the libraries are used
or not. For example right now the freeinkui and icons libraries are in
the platform.io file but as they are not used anywhere, they won't be
included in the final build. Once the touch branch and sd themes branch
are merged in this sdk is required for them to function correctly. All
the docs for freeink are available at freeink.org/docs. x4/x3 is a
single binary build unlike other devices that will build unique binaries
for each device. Eventually we will want to remove a lot of the manual
isx3 type stuff from our firmware and go through the boardsupport api
the sdk provides as it will generalize everything into one common system
that any device can support. The upcoming touch branch does a lot of
this for us but this initial PR is JUST to get the sdk swapped over
without any code changes to show seamless integration without any
regressions.

Leopoldo Pla Sempere 7f01eab62e docs: refresh cache formats and web server workflows (#2233)
## Summary

* **What is the goal of this PR?** Update project documentation to match
the current master implementation for cache formats, i18n, file
transfer/web server workflows, SD-card fonts, and root user-facing docs.
* **What changes are included?** Refreshes `book.bin`/`section.bin` docs
for v6/v25, updates File Transfer/Calibre/WebDAV/API docs, documents 24
UI languages and JSON language persistence, updates root
README/USER_GUIDE cache and network details, and syncs the tracked
CLAUDE skill doc cache-version notes.

## Additional Context

* Docs-only change. Verified with `git diff --check origin/master..HEAD`
and stale-reference greps for old cache versions, removed i18n APIs, old
WiFi screen wording, and raw `Serial.printf` examples. No firmware build
was run.

Danila Yudin 082b5f295b docs: update delete endpoint reference (#1940)
## Summary

Update the `/delete` endpoint reference to match the current web server
handler.

## Details

The endpoint docs still described a `type` form field and the old
`Deleted successfully` response. The handler now accepts either `path`
for a single item or `paths` as a JSON array for multi-delete, infers
file versus folder from the SD card entry, and returns `All items
deleted successfully` when all deletes complete.

This updates the curl examples, parameter table, success response, and
error response list to match the implemented behavior.

## Validation

- Compared the documented parameters and response strings with
`CrossPointWebServer::handleDelete()`
- `git diff --check`

Danila Yudin 24977048c3 docs: fix hyphenation updater script name (#1931)
## Summary

* Rename the hyphenation update script to match the documented
`update_hyphenation.sh` name.
* Update the hyphenation trie documentation command example to use the
renamed script.

## Additional Context

The prose in `docs/hyphenation-trie-format.md` referred to
`update_hyphenation.sh`, but the command example and file on disk used
`update_hypenation.sh`. This made the documented script name
inconsistent with the runnable command.

Verified with `rg` that no references to the misspelled script name
remain. Also ran `bash -n scripts/update_hyphenation.sh` to syntax-check
the renamed script without downloading trie files.

Vincent Politzer 4e5e2fe40a feat: focus reading (#1670)
## Summary

This PR introduces **Focus Reading**, a generic implementation of
artificial fixation points (similar to Bionic Reading) designed to
improve reading speed and focus by bolding the initial characters of
words. This is achieved by dynamically bolding characters during
indexing.

<img width="500" alt="Focus Reading on X3"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/94a632a5-82da-47be-957c-538b35bf84d9"
/>

### Implementation Details
#### Core Text Engine (`ParsedText`)
- Modified `ParsedText::addWord` to implement a custom bolding
algorithm. It uses a 45% ratio for bolding, with a minimum of 1
character and a maximum of 9.
- UTF-8 Safety: Integrated `utf8NextCodepoint` to ensure character
counting and string slicing occur at safe byte boundaries, preventing
corruption of multi-byte characters (e.g., accented letters or smart
quotes).
- Intelligent Tokenization: This correctly identifies and separates
"word" characters (letters, apostrophes, hyphens) from "non-word"
characters (numbers, brackets, smart quotes).
- Formatting Preservation: The logic ensures that punctuation is not
"stolen" for the bolding count and that existing styles (like italics or
underlines) are preserved across the bold/regular split.
- Processing at indexing stage reduces CPU load at render-time and
ensures layout/fit is unaffected.
- Split details are tracked with `wordIsFocusSuffix`. After splitting
and layout, suffixes are merged back into their preceding word entries
to prevent a doubling of RAM usage.

#### Settings and UI
- Version Management: Bumped `SECTION_FILE_VERSION` to `21`
- Global Settings: Added `focusReadingEnabled` to `CrossPointSettings`.
- User Interface: Added a new toggle in the "Reader" section of the
settings menu, positioned after the "Embedded Style" option.
- Localization: Added the `STR_FOCUS_READING` string

#### Plumbing
- Plumbed the `focusReadingEnabled` boolean through
`EpubReaderActivity`, `Section`, and `ChapterHtmlSlimParser` to ensure
the user's setting reaches the `ParsedText` constructor during chapter
indexing.

## Additional Context

### Files Changed
- `lib/Epub/Epub/ParsedText.h / .cpp`: Core fixation logic and UTF-8
tokenization.
- `lib/Epub/Epub/Section.h / .cpp`: Cache header updates and
invalidation logic.
- `lib/Epub/Epub/parsers/ChapterHtmlSlimParser.h / .cpp`: Plumbing the
setting to text blocks.
- `src/CrossPointSettings.h`: Data persistence for the new setting.
- `src/SettingsList.h`: UI toggle implementation.
- `src/activities/reader/EpubReaderActivity.cpp`: Handling settings
changes during reading sessions.
- `lib/I18n/translations/*.yaml`: UI strings.

7993b2bb97 feat: add SD card font support with on-device download and web management
Add a complete SD card font subsystem that enables users to install and
use custom fonts beyond the three built-in families. This combines the
back-end firmware support (#1327) with the font configuration, build
pipeline, CI distribution, and user-facing management UI (#1392).

Core font system:
- Custom .cpfont binary format (v4) with multi-style support (regular,
bold, italic, bold-italic) packed into a single file per size
- On-demand glyph loading from SD card with two-pass prewarm rendering
to bulk-read glyphs per page, achieving near-flash performance for
Latin text (~697ms vs ~681ms) and viable CJK rendering (~32% slower)
- Persistent advance cache for layout measurement without SD I/O
- Overflow ring buffer for glyph cache misses during rendering
- Memory-conscious design: only advance tables kept in RAM; glyph
bitmaps, kern tables, and ligatures loaded on demand from SD

Font management:
- On-device WiFi download from GitHub Releases with manifest-based
discovery, install/update detection, and progress UI
- Web interface font upload, listing, and deletion via /fonts page
- Manual SD card copy to /fonts/ or /.fonts/ directories
- Font selection integrated into Settings > Reader > Font Family

Build pipeline:
- Declarative YAML config (sd-fonts.yaml) as single source of truth
for the 17-family font library (serif, sans, mono, accessibility)
- Python converter (fontconvert_sdcard.py) for TTF/OTF to .cpfont with
FreeType rasterization, class-based kerning, and ligature extraction
- Parallel build orchestrator with variable font instance extraction
- CI workflow publishing versioned + stable releases to a dedicated
crosspoint-fonts repository with auto-incrementing revision tags
- Centralized version constants (cpfont_version.py) shared across
build tooling and CI, with firmware headers as manual sync points

Additional fixes:
- CJK characters no longer get hyphens inserted at line breaks
- Advance table eliminates 30+ second stalls during CJK section
indexing for paragraphs with >512 unique codepoints

4ef433e373 feat: add turkish translation (#1192)
Description
This Pull Request introduces Turkish language support to CrossPoint
  Reader firmware.

  Key Changes:
- Translation File: Added lib/I18n/translations/turkish.yaml with 315
translated
string keys, covering all system UI elements.
- I18N Script Update: Modified scripts/gen_i18n.py to include the "TR"
     abbreviation mapping for Turkish.
- System Integration: Regenerated I18N C++ files to include the new
Language::TR
     enum and STRINGS_TR array.
- UI Availability: The language is now selectable in the Settings menu
and
     correctly handles Turkish-specific characters (ç, ğ, ı, ö, ş, ü).
- Documentation: Updated docs/i18n.md to include Turkish in the list of
     supported languages.

  Testing:
   - Verified the build locally with PlatformIO.
- Flashed the firmware to an Xteink X4 device and confirmed the Turkish
UI
     renders correctly.

Dani Povedaandcoderabbitai[bot] a350492571 fix: improve and add Spanish translations (#1254)
## Summary

* **What is the goal of this PR?**
    - Improve and add the latest missing Spanish translations

* **What changes are included?**
- Add missing spaces and remove extra unneeded ones (spaces at the end
of certain strings and others, i.e. the one introduced in the string
`Smart Device`; actually, `SmartDevice` is the correct Calibre plugin
name)
    - Normalise the use of caps in certain strings
- Adapting the translation to the one found in related third-party
software (i.e. Spanish translation for the word `plugin` in Calibre is
`complemento`)
- Shortening some translations to make them smaller and fit better in
screen
- Rewording ambiguous translations (i.e. `Volver a inicio` could mean to
go back to Home, but also to go back to the first page of the current
book, so I changed it for a more specific action, `Volver al menú
Inicio`)

## Additional Context

* **Missing spaces caused a lack of clarity**

ariel-lindemann 7e214ea760 feat: sort languages in selection menu (#1071)
## Summary

* **What is the goal of this PR?** (e.g., Implements the new feature for
file uploading.)

Currently we are displaying the languages in the order they were added
(as in the `Language` enum). However, as new languages are coming in,
this will quickly be confusing to the users.

But we can't just change the ordering of the enum if we want to respect
bakwards compatibility.

So my proposal is to add a mapping of the alphabetical order of the
languages. I've made it so that it's generated by the `gen_i18n.py`
script, which will be used when a new language is added.

* **What changes are included?**

Added the array from the python script and changed
`LanguageSelectActivity` to use the indices from there. Also commited
the generated `I18nKeys.h`

## Additional Context

* Add any other information that might be helpful for the reviewer
(e.g., performance implications, potential risks,
  specific areas to focus on).

I was wondering if there is a better way to sort it. Currently, it's by
unicode value and Czech and Russian are last, which I don't know it it's
the most intuitive.

The current order is:
`Català, Deutsch, English, Español, Français, Português (Brasil),
Română, Svenska, Čeština, Русский`

Bilal f62529ad91 docs: Add lightweight contributor onboarding documentation (#894)
### Summary

This PR introduces a lightweight contributor onboarding docs section
under `docs/contributing/` and improves local formatting ergonomics for
first-time contributors.

The goal is to make CrossPoint easier to contribute to for software
developers who are new to embedded systems (like me), while keeping
onboarding modular and aligned with existing project docs.

### What changed

- Added contributor docs hub: `docs/contributing/README.md`
- Added focused onboarding pages:
  - `docs/contributing/getting-started.md`
  - `docs/contributing/architecture.md`
  - `docs/contributing/development-workflow.md`
  - `docs/contributing/testing-debugging.md`
- Linked contributor docs from `README.md` for discoverability
- Expanded architecture documentation with Mermaid diagrams
- Improved `bin/clang-format-fix`:
  - prefers `clang-format-21` when available
- validates formatter version and fails fast with a clear message if too
old
  - handles missing positional arg safely
- Updated docs to explain common `clang-format` setup/version issues and
install paths (including fallback steps when `clang-format-21` is
unavailable in default apt sources)

### Why

- There was no dedicated contributor onboarding path; first-time
contributors had to infer workflow from multiple files.
- New contributors (especially from non-embedded backgrounds) need a
clear mental model of architecture, runtime flow, and debugging process.
- Local formatting setup caused avoidable friction due to clang-format
version mismatch (`.clang-format` expects newer keys used in CI).
- The updates make contribution setup more predictable, reduce
onboarding confusion, and align local checks with CI expectations.

7ba5978848 feat: User-Interface I18n System (#728)
## Summary

**What is the goal of this PR?**
This PR introduces Internationalization (i18n) support, enabling users
to switch the UI language dynamically.

**What changes are included?**
- Core Logic: Added I18n class (`lib/I18n/I18n.h/cpp`) to manage
language state and string retrieval.

- Data Structures:

- `lib/I18n/I18nStrings.h/cpp`: Static string arrays for each supported
language.
  - `lib/I18n/I18nKeys.h`: Enum definitions for type-safe string access.
  - `lib/I18n/translations.csv`: single source of truth.

- Documentation: Added `docs/i18n.md` detailing the workflow for
developers and translators.

- New Settings activity:
`src/activities/settings/LanguageSelectActivity.h/cpp`

## Additional Context

This implementation (building on concepts from #505) prioritizes
performance and memory efficiency.

The core approach is to store all localized strings for each language in
dedicated arrays and access them via enums. This provides O(1) access
with zero runtime overhead, and avoids the heap allocations, hashing,
and collision handling required by `std::map` or `std::unordered_map`.

The main trade-off is that enums and string arrays must remain perfectly
synchronized—any mismatch would result in incorrect strings being
displayed in the UI.

To eliminate this risk, I added a Python script that automatically
generates `I18nStrings.h/.cpp` and `I18nKeys.h` from a CSV file, which
will serve as the single source of truth for all translations. The full
design and workflow are documented in `docs/i18n.md`.

### Next Steps

- [x] Python script `generate_i18n.py` to auto-generate C++ files from
CSV
- [x] Populate translations.csv with initial translations.

Currently available translations: English, Español, Français, Deutsch,
Čeština, Português (Brasil), Русский, Svenska.
Thanks, community!

**Status:** EDIT: ready to be merged.

As a proof of concept, the SPANISH strings currently mirror the English
ones, but are fully uppercased.

I used AI for the black work of replacing strings with I18n references
across the project, and for generating the documentation. EDIT: also
some help with merging changes from master.

Xuan-Son Nguyen 0508bfc1f7 perf: apply (micro) optimization on SerializedHyphenationPatterns (#689)
## Summary

This PR applies a micro optimization on `SerializedHyphenationPatterns`,
which allow reading `rootOffset` directly without having to parse then
cache it.

It should not affect storage space since no new bytes are added.

This also gets rid of the linear cache search whenever
`liangBreakIndexes` is called. In theory, the performance should be
improved a bit, although it may be too small to be noticeable in
practice.

Aaron Cunliffe f67c544e16 fix: webserver folder creation regex change (#653)
## Summary

Resolves #562

Implements regex change to support valid characters discussed by
@daveallie in issue
[here](https://github.com/crosspoint-reader/crosspoint-reader/issues/562#issuecomment-3830809156).

Also rejects `.` and `..` as folder names which are invalid in FAT32 and
exFAT filesystems

## Additional Context
- Unsure on the wording for the alert, it feels overly explicit, but
that might be a good thing. Happy to change.

Juan Biondi e3d6e32609 docs: Add detailed webserver documentation (#446)
## More detailed documentation

* **What is the goal of this PR?**
Add more information about the exposed webserver.
* **What changes are included?**
Detailed documentation for the webserver endpoints
(`./docs/webserver-endpoints.md`)
Adding a table of content so it is easier to navigate directly to the
section you're interested on (Almost all `.md` files or at least all
those relevant)

## Additional Context

Not sure if this would get accepted but I thought it might be useful for
those trying to create separate apps that would sync files to the
device. It was at least to me trying to upload files using python as
stated

Arthur TazhitdinovandDave Allie 8824c87490 feat: dict based Hyphenation (#305)
## Summary

* Adds (optional) Hyphenation for English, French, German, Russian
languages

## Additional Context

* Included hyphenation dictionaries add approximately 280kb to the flash
usage (German alone takes 200kb)
* Trie encoded dictionaries are adopted from hypher project
(https://github.com/typst/hypher)
* Soft hyphens (and other explicit hyphens) take precedence over
dict-based hyphenation. Overall, the hyphenation rules are quite
aggressive, as I believe it makes more sense on our smaller screen.

## Summary

* Consolidate chapter page data into single file
* Header structure of the file stays the same, following the page count,
we now put a LUT offset
   * The page data is all then appended to this file
* Finally the LUT is appended to the end of the file, and the page count
is updated
* This will also significantly improve the duration of cache cleanup
which takes a while to scan the directory and cleanup content
* Remove page file version as it's all tied up into the section file now
* Bumped section file version to 7
* Moved section content into sub directory
* Updated docs
