checkForUpdate no longer needs its own client and event handler to fetch
the release JSON. It streams the response straight into
ReleaseJsonParser through a new HttpDownloader::fetchUrl(url,
DataCallback) overload, dropping the duplicate esp_http_client setup,
the HTTP_EVENT_ON_DATA handler, and the totalBytesReceived file global.
DataCallback hands body chunks to a callback without buffering. The
naive alternative, collecting the ~32KB JSON into a std::string, aborts
under -fno-exceptions: the growing allocation collides with the TLS
session's heap mid-fetch and operator new calls abort().
The OTA install path stays on esp_https_ota (flash-write streaming),
which has no HttpDownloader equivalent.
HttpDownloader.h must precede the lwip (esp_http_client) headers in
OtaUpdater.cpp, or Arduino/SdFat macros collide with lwip.

Based on the learnings from
https://github.com/crosspoint-reader/crosspoint-reader/pull/2074 , I
wanted to bring the same buffer savings to the rest of our HTTP Client
stack. That being said, HttpDownloader (fonts/OPDS) used the Arduino
HTTPClient.
HttpDownloader was the last consumer of the Arduino HTTPClient +
NetworkClientSecure stack. OtaUpdater already runs on esp_http_client,
so this drops the parallel HTTP/TLS implementation. It also fixes a
class of OPDS/font download failures: HTTPClient's setTimeout is uint16
and truncates, and its short per-read deadline killed slow or chunked
responses (the -11 / incomplete-data errors).
What changed:
- Rewrote fetchUrl/downloadToFile around esp_http_client with a
streaming open() -> fetch_headers() -> read() loop, manual redirect
following, and is_complete_data_received() as the completeness gate.
Body bytes go straight to the sink (OPDS parser stream, std::string, or
file), so nothing buffers the payload.
- HTTPS is now verified against the CA bundle instead of
NetworkClientSecure::setInsecure(). esp-tls is built with
CONFIG_ESP_TLS_INSECURE off, so an unverified handshake can't be set up
anyway; the model is public servers over verified https and local
servers over plain http (transport is chosen from the URL scheme).
** Self-signed https servers are no longer supported, by design. **
- timeout_ms is 60s; esp_http_client's timeout is uint32, so unlike
HTTPClient it doesn't silently truncate.
- HTTP buffers are 4096 (rx) / 1024 (tx). 4096 holds real OPDS server
headers; the GitHub release CDN sends more and logs a non-fatal
truncation warning, but the headers we read (Location, Content-Length)
come first and survive.
- Removed the now-unused UrlUtils::isHttpsUrl and a stale HTTPClient
comment in FontDownloadActivity.
Validated on device: OPDS browse and a 3.4 MB book download over
verified https, GitHub font downloads (crc-checked), redirect handling
matching curl, and slow/erroring servers surfaced correctly.

OTA install streams the full 5.8MB image over a multi-minute TLS session
while wifi/LWIP already holds the big internal arena. Measured on
device, the arena bottomed out at ~7.7KB free with the largest
contiguous block down to ~2.4KB; for 80% of the download there wasn't
even a contiguous 8KB block. It finishes on a clean heap but tips into
OOM for anyone carrying more pre-OTA fragmentation.
Two avoidable drains, both in OtaUpdater:
- The esp_http_client RX/TX buffers were 8192/8192 on both the version
check and the install. RX only has to hold response headers (bodies
stream through the parser / OTA writer) and TX only carries our GET, so
trim both to 4096/1024. 4096 still fits the github->CDN redirect
headers; the 512 IDF default truncates them, which is why they got
oversized in the first place.
- installUpdate fired the progress callback every ~100ms perform
iteration, waking the render task on every tick. Its framebuffer work
fights the TLS session for the same arena, and epd can't really repaint
faster than a percent anyway. Throttle it to whole-percent changes.
On device, combined: floor 7.7KB -> 19KB, worstcase contiguous block
2.4KB -> 21KB, zero sub 8KB iterations across the whole download.
KOReaderSyncClient already uses small buffers; HttpDownloader is on the
Arduino HTTPClient stack with no equivalent knob, so neither changed.

showed it had to do with the SHUTTING_DOWN state. Strengthened the WiFi
State Machine a bit and added self-healing. Additionally, I found it
obnoxious to need to keep referring to serial for my wifi strength, so a
dBm meter is added opposing the SSID when on the File Transfer page.

hovered right around a threshold), so I've implemented a basic

failure condition pretty regularly. Wifi "bars" were chosen as a
relatively pan-cultural glyph rather than relying on localization.
Tested on hardware at -83 dBm under sustained EPUB upload (60 books, ~30
MB). Transient losses up to ~14s now ride through; pre-fix the same
losses required a power-cycle after as little as a 2s blip.

The GitHub recent release API returns lots of data, including the full
release notes. For 1.2.0, that data is 30,530 bytes. The existing
OtaUpdater HTTP handler and single-buffer JSON parsing can't reliably
handle that much data in the constrained ESP32 environment.
This change does a few things:
1. Adds a very simple lib/JsonParser/StreamingJsonParser.cpp with
SAX-style callbacks to read JSON data incrementally.
2. Adds a very simple lib/JsonParser/ReleaseJsonParser.cpp building on

## Summary

`DESTRUCTOR_CLOSES_FILE=1` is set in platformio.ini, which makes SdFat's
FsBaseFile destructor call close() automatically when a file goes out of
scope.
Three categories of file close calls remain untouched:
1. Close before Storage.remove() on the same path: ScreenshotUtil.cpp
closes the file before deleting it on write error. The remove might fail
if the file is still open.
2. Close before reopening the same variable: Epub.cpp writes a temp
NCX/nav file, closes it, then reopens it for reading. The
RecentBooksStore.cpp close before saveToFile() is the same pattern, it
rewrites the same file.
3. Close on member variables: BookMetadataCache.cpp (bookFile,

ZipFile.cpp (file). These persist beyond any single function scope, so

EPUBs with images in other formats than **baseline JPEG** frequently

The optimizer was applied in batch to **61 EPUBs**:
- 60 standard EPUBs: 198 MB → 55 MB (**−72.2%**, 143 MB saved)
- Text-dominant books: 8–46% smaller (covers and inline images
converted)
- Image-heavy / illustrated books: 65–93% smaller
- 1 Large manga volume (594 MB): 594 MB → 72 MB (**−87.8%**, 522 MB
saved)
- EPUB structural integrity fully maintained — zero new validation
issues introduced across all 61 books

overhead for adding a new setting. Previously, every new setting
required manually editing JsonSettingsIO.cpp in two places (save +
load), duplicating knowledge already present in SettingsList.h. After
this PR, JsonSettingsIO.cpp never needs to be touched again for standard
settings.

the struct field's own initializer value as the fallback (see below).
* `SettingsList.h` entries are annotated with `.withObfuscated()` on the
OPDS password entry. The list is now returned as a `static const`
singleton (`const std::vector<SettingInfo>&`), so it is constructed
exactly once. A missing `key`/`category` on the
`statusBarProgressBarThickness` entry was also fixed — it was previously
skipped by the generic save loop, so changes were silently lost on
restart.
* `JsonSettingsIO::saveSettings` and `loadSettings` replace their ~90
lines of manual per-field code with a single generic loop over
`getSettingsList()`. The loop uses `info.key`,
`info.valuePtr`/`info.stringOffset`+`info.stringMaxLen` (for char-array
string fields), `info.enumValues.size()` (for enum clamping), and
`info.obfuscated`.
* **Default values**: instead of a duplicated `defaultValue` field in
`SettingInfo`, `loadSettings` reads `s.*(info.valuePtr)` *before*
overwriting it. Because `CrossPointSettings` is default-constructed
before `loadSettings` is called, this captures each field's struct
initializer value as the JSON-absent fallback. The single source of
truth for defaults is `CrossPointSettings.h`.
* One post-loop special case remains explicitly: the four `frontButton*`
remap fields (managed by the RemapFrontButtons sub-activity, not in
SettingsList) and `validateFrontButtonMapping()`.
* One pre-loop migration guard handles legacy settings files that
predate the status bar refactor: if `statusBarChapterPageCount` is
absent from the JSON, `applyLegacyStatusBarSettings()` is called first
so the generic loop picks up the migrated values as defaults and applies
its normal clamping.
* OPDS password backward-compat migration (plain `opdsPassword` →
obfuscated `opdsPassword_obf`) is preserved inside the generic
obfuscated-string path.
## Additional Context
Say we want to add a new `bookmarkStyle` enum setting with options

## Additional Context
This implementation (building on concepts from #505) prioritizes
performance and memory efficiency.
The core approach is to store all localized strings for each language in
dedicated arrays and access them via enums. This provides O(1) access
with zero runtime overhead, and avoids the heap allocations, hashing,
and collision handling required by `std::map` or `std::unordered_map`.
The main trade-off is that enums and string arrays must remain perfectly
synchronized—any mismatch would result in incorrect strings being
displayed in the UI.
To eliminate this risk, I added a Python script that automatically
generates `I18nStrings.h/.cpp` and `I18nKeys.h` from a CSV file, which
will serve as the single source of truth for all translations. The full
design and workflow are documented in `docs/i18n.md`.

## Summary
Currently, each activity has to manage their own `displayTaskLoop` which
adds redundant boilerplate code. The loop is a wait loop which is also
not the best practice, as the `updateRequested` boolean is not protected
by a mutex.
In this PR:
- Move `displayTaskLoop` to the super `Activity` class
- Replace `updateRequested` with freeRTOS's [direct to task
notification](https://www.freertos.org/Documentation/02-Kernel/02-Kernel-features/03-Direct-to-task-notifications/01-Task-notifications)
- For `ActivityWithSubactivity`, whenever a sub-activity is present, the
parent's `render()` automatically goes inactive
With this change, activities now only need to expose `render()`
function, and anywhere in the code base can call `requestUpdate()` to
request a new rendering pass.

The CPU load does decrease a bit (1.47% down to 1.39%), which make
sense, because the display task is now sleeping most of the time unless
notified. This should translate to a slightly increase in battery life
in the long run.

## Summary
Pre-compress the HTML file to save flash space. I'm using `gzip` because
it's supported everywhere (indeed, we are using the same optimization on
[llama.cpp server](https://github.com/ggml-org/llama.cpp), our HTML page
is huge 😅 ).
This free up ~40KB flash space.
Some users suggested using `brotli` which is known to further reduce 20%
in size, but it doesn't supported by firefox (only supports if served
via HTTPS), and some reverse proxy like nginx doesn't support it out of

This is an updated version of @itsthisjustin's #346 that builds on
current master and also deduplicates the settings list so we don't have
two copies of the settings. In the Web UI, it should organize the
settings a little closer to what you see on device.

I tested this live on device and it seems to play nicely for me. It's
re-based on master since master's settings stuff has moved somewhat
since the original PR and addresses the sole review comment #346 - it
also means that I don't need to manually key in the URL for my OPDS

Existing OTA functionality is very buggy, many of times (I would say 8
out of 10) are end up with fail for me. When the time that it works it
is very slow and take ages. For others looks like end up with crash or
different issues.

To be honest, I'm not familiar with Arduino APIs of OTA process, but
looks like not good as much esp-idf itself. I always found Arduino APIs
very bulky for esp32. Wrappers and wrappers.

Right now, OTA takes ~ 3min 10sec (of course depends on size of .bin
file). Can be tested with playing version info inside from
`platform.ini` file.
