Justin Mitchell 7cad3cfb0e Fix heap fragmentation issues
- Keep-if-fits font buffer reuse (SdCardFont), the page-turn fragmentation fix
- Background-build heap floors + buildTickHeapGate() (the ParsedText::addWord abort fix), with the BLE-shed branch removed
- KOSync TLS gate split (free ≥ 50K, largest block ≥ 20K)
- wolfSSL SP ECC flags + FP_MAX_BITS 8192 in the patch script
- custom_sdkconfig: timer-stack trims (~7KB) and, per your answer, the WiFi IRAM opts (~25-30KB); plus the cloud-component removal the hybrid build requires. All verified present in the generated sdkconfig after the build.
- Web server watchdog registration fix (this branch's handlers already call esp_task_wdt_reset without it)

Julia f39ba7037f fix(settings): preserve quick resume timeout preference (#2101)
## Summary

### **What is the goal of this PR?**
This fixes an unintended settings side effect when cycling the `Sleep
Screen` option through `Quick Resume`.

Previously, selecting `Sleep Screen = Quick Resume` globally forced
`Quick Resume on Timeout = ON` and left it enabled even after the user
toggled `Sleep Screen` to another option within the same settings
session. Now the auto-enable behavior is scoped to the Settings screen
session:

- If `Quick Resume on Timeout` was already `ON` when entering Settings,
it stays `ON`.
- If it was `OFF`, selecting `Sleep Screen = Quick Resume` temporarily
turns it `ON`.
- If the user then switches away from `Quick Resume`, it turns back
`OFF`.

### **What changes are included?**

- Removes the global logic that permanently forced `Quick Resume on
Timeout` to `ON` whenever `Sleep Screen` was set to `Quick Resume`, even
if it was just due to toggling through the options.
- Adds Settings-screen session tracking so `Quick Resume on Timeout` is
only auto-enabled while the user has `Sleep Screen = Quick Resume`.
- Restores `Quick Resume on Timeout` back to `OFF` when the user
switches away, but only if it was `OFF` when they entered Settings.
- Preserves existing `ON` timeout preferences.
- Same behavior applies to the web settings

## Additional Context

- Tested this on device and via the settings UI

Julia c44555007b feat(settings): modify "Page as Sleep Screen" to "Quick Resume" options (#2089)
## Summary

**What is the goal of this PR?**

Adds a clearer Quick Resume sleep-screen flow. The previous “Page as
Sleep Screen” behavior is now exposed as a dedicated `Sleep Screen >
Quick Resume `option, with the timeout-only behavior controlled by a
renamed `Quick Resume on Timeout `setting.

**What changes are included?**

- Adds `Quick Resume` as a new `Sleep Screen` option.
- Renames the old `Page as Sleep Screen` setting to `Quick Resume on
Timeout`.
- Changes that setting’s choices from `Never / After Timeout / Always`
to `OFF / ON`.
- Makes `Quick Resume on Timeout = ON` equivalent to the old `After
Timeout` behavior.
- Makes `Sleep Screen > Quick Resume` equivalent to the old `Always`
behavior.
- Automatically forces `Quick Resume on Timeout` to `ON` when `Sleep
Screen` is set to `Quick Resume`.
- Renames internal setting references from `seamlessSleepScreen` to
`quickResumeSleepScreen`.
- Updates translations for the renamed setting label.

**Additional Context**

- This is mostly a settings/labeling restructure around existing
behavior, not a new rendering path.
- The runtime quick-resume behavior still uses the existing saved
framebuffer / last-screen sleep flow.
- Review focus areas:
  - Sleep entry behavior from manual sleep vs timeout sleep.
- The automatic dependency where selecting `Sleep Screen > Quick Resume`
sets `Quick Resume on Timeout` to `ON`.

Zach Nelson 30b14f2ecf refactor: Removed SdCardFontGlobals.h (#1962)
## Summary

First of several changes to decouple and clean up SD card fonts
integration. This change eliminates SdCardFontGlobals.h:
- Simply declare the `extern SdCardFontSystem sdFontSystem` in
SdCardFontSystem.h.
- `ActivityManager::goToReader` should not care about loading SD card
fonts. Instead do the same work in `ReaderActivity::onEnter`, after the
previous activity has exited and after ReaderActivity has validated the
file path.

7993b2bb97 feat: add SD card font support with on-device download and web management
Add a complete SD card font subsystem that enables users to install and
use custom fonts beyond the three built-in families. This combines the
back-end firmware support (#1327) with the font configuration, build
pipeline, CI distribution, and user-facing management UI (#1392).

Core font system:
- Custom .cpfont binary format (v4) with multi-style support (regular,
  bold, italic, bold-italic) packed into a single file per size
- On-demand glyph loading from SD card with two-pass prewarm rendering
  to bulk-read glyphs per page, achieving near-flash performance for
  Latin text (~697ms vs ~681ms) and viable CJK rendering (~32% slower)
- Persistent advance cache for layout measurement without SD I/O
- Overflow ring buffer for glyph cache misses during rendering
- Memory-conscious design: only advance tables kept in RAM; glyph
  bitmaps, kern tables, and ligatures loaded on demand from SD

Font management:
- On-device WiFi download from GitHub Releases with manifest-based
  discovery, install/update detection, and progress UI
- Web interface font upload, listing, and deletion via /fonts page
- Manual SD card copy to /fonts/ or /.fonts/ directories
- Font selection integrated into Settings > Reader > Font Family

Build pipeline:
- Declarative YAML config (sd-fonts.yaml) as single source of truth
  for the 17-family font library (serif, sans, mono, accessibility)
- Python converter (fontconvert_sdcard.py) for TTF/OTF to .cpfont with
  FreeType rasterization, class-based kerning, and ligature extraction
- Parallel build orchestrator with variable font instance extraction
- CI workflow publishing versioned + stable releases to a dedicated
  crosspoint-fonts repository with auto-incrementing revision tags
- Centralized version constants (cpfont_version.py) shared across
  build tooling and CI, with firmware headers as manual sync points

Additional fixes:
- CJK characters no longer get hyphens inserted at line breaks
- Advance table eliminates 30+ second stalls during CJK section
  indexing for paragraphs with >512 unique codepoints

Jeremy Klein adcd7961c9 feat: self-heal from transient WiFi loss, add dBm indicator during WebServerActivity (#1780)
## Summary
* **What is the goal of this PR?**

I was seeing hangs during File Transfer. Troubleshooting via serial
showed it had to do with the SHUTTING_DOWN state. Strengthened the WiFi
State Machine a bit and added self-healing. Additionally, I found it
obnoxious to need to keep referring to serial for my wifi strength, so a
dBm meter is added opposing the SSID when on the File Transfer page.

* **What changes are included?**

The dBm meter was at risk of causing rapid screen updates (if, say, we
hovered right around a threshold), so I've implemented a basic
hysteresis around this. RISING/FALLING would be more canonical variable
names, but are reserved in the framework.

## Additional Context

My X4 has a terrible antenna, apparently, and I was running into this
failure condition pretty regularly. Wifi "bars" were chosen as a
relatively pan-cultural glyph rather than relying on localization.

Tested on hardware at -83 dBm under sustained EPUB upload (60 books, ~30
MB). Transient losses up to ~14s now ride through; pre-fix the same
losses required a power-cycle after as little as a 2s blip.

Arthur TazhitdinovandCopilot 1cf2239742 feat: Support for multiple OPDS servers (#1209)
## Summary

* Add support for configuring and using multiple OPDS servers, replacing
the previous single-server limitation. Closes
https://github.com/crosspoint-reader/crosspoint-reader/issues/1178
* New OpdsServerStore singleton (modeled after WifiCredentialStore) that
persists up to 8 OPDS servers to /.crosspoint/opds.json with MAC-based
password obfuscation.
* One-time migration from legacy single-server fields in
CrossPointSettings to the new store on first boot.
* New OpdsServerListActivity for the device UI — works in two modes: a
settings list (add/edit/delete servers) and a picker (select which
server to browse). When only one server is configured, the picker is
skipped automatically.
* Renamed CalibreSettingsActivity → OpdsSettingsActivity for clarity. It
now edits individual OpdsServer entries (name, URL, username, password,
delete).
* OpdsBookBrowserActivity now receives an OpdsServer at construction and
uses its credentials for all fetches/downloads, and shows the server
name in the header.
* HttpDownloader::fetchUrl and downloadToFile accept optional per-call
username/password parameters instead of reading from global settings.
* REST API endpoints on CrossPointWebServer: GET /api/opds, POST
/api/opds, POST /api/opds/delete — passwords are never exposed over the
API (only a hasPassword flag), and omitting the password field on update
preserves the existing one.
* Web UI (SettingsPage.html) with dynamic OPDS server management cards —
add, edit, save, and delete servers from the browser.
<img width="932" height="906" alt="SCR-20260416-stvu"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/a8f18d84-4204-46a0-bb31-b73d24b3255f"
/>

## Additional Context

* The OpdsServerStore JSON format and obfuscation scheme are identical
to WifiCredentialStore, so the same JsonSettingsIO infrastructure
handles both.
* The web API uses POST /api/opds/delete instead of DELETE /api/opds
because the ESP32 WebServer doesn't support the DELETE method with a
request body.
* Existing single-server configurations are migrated automatically — no
user action required. After migration the legacy CrossPointSettings
fields are cleared so it only runs once.
* The HttpDownloader changes are backward-compatible: the credential
parameters default to empty strings, so existing callers are unaffected.

Zach Nelson 23aad213fc refactor: Removed redundant FsFile close() calls (#1434)
## Summary

**What is the goal of this PR?** (e.g., Implements the new feature for
file uploading.)

`DESTRUCTOR_CLOSES_FILE=1` is set in platformio.ini, which makes SdFat's
FsBaseFile destructor call close() automatically when a file goes out of
scope.

Three categories of file close calls remain untouched:
1. Close before Storage.remove() on the same path: ScreenshotUtil.cpp
closes the file before deleting it on write error. The remove might fail
if the file is still open.
2. Close before reopening the same variable: Epub.cpp writes a temp
NCX/nav file, closes it, then reopens it for reading. The
RecentBooksStore.cpp close before saveToFile() is the same pattern, it
rewrites the same file.
3. Close on member variables: BookMetadataCache.cpp (bookFile,
spineFile, tocFile), Section.cpp (file), XtcParser.cpp (m_file),
ZipFile.cpp (file). These persist beyond any single function scope, so
the destructor timing doesn't match the intended close point.

Diana 05f8e6e12d fix: webserver /delete API backward compatibility (#1475)
## Summary

* **What is the goal of this PR?** (e.g., Implements the new feature for
file uploading.)

This fixes #682 by restoring API compatibility for external users, eg
deleting on-device books in bulk via calibre using the crosspoint plugin
works now.

* **What changes are included?**

The `/delete` webserver API now accepts the old `path` argument and maps
it to a JSON array element. It is made an error to provide both
arguments.

## Additional Context

* Add any other information that might be helpful for the reviewer
(e.g., performance implications, potential risks,
  specific areas to focus on).

I have compiled, flashed, and tested this on master at commit
0245972132. Before this change, calibre
cannot delete books, either individually or in bulk.

After this change, it can do so successfully.

pablohcandzgredex 7d56810ee6 feat: integrated epub optimizer (#1224)
## Problem

Many e-ink readers have limited image decoder support natively.
EPUBs with images in other formats than **baseline JPEG** frequently
cause:

- **Broken images**: pages render as blank, corrupted noise, or never
load
- **Slow rendering**: unoptimized images cause severe delays on e-ink
hardware, up to 7 seconds per page turn, with cover images taking up to
59 seconds to render
- **Broken covers**: the book thumbnail never generates

Fixing this today requires external tools before uploading.

---

## What this PR does

Adds an **optional, on-demand EPUB optimizer** to the file upload flow.
When enabled,
it converts all images to baseline JPEG directly in the browser — no
server, no internet,
no external tools needed.

**Conversion is opt-in. The standard upload flow is unchanged.**

---

## Real-world impact

The optimizer was applied in batch to **61 EPUBs**:
- 60 standard EPUBs: 198 MB → 55 MB (**−72.2%**, 143 MB saved)
- Text-dominant books: 8–46% smaller (covers and inline images
converted)
  - Image-heavy / illustrated books: 65–93% smaller
- 1 Large manga volume (594 MB): 594 MB → 72 MB (**−87.8%**, 522 MB
saved)
- EPUB structural integrity fully maintained — zero new validation
issues introduced across all 61 books

*Size and integrity analysis:
[epub-comparator](https://github.com/pablohc/epub-comparator)*

From that set, **17 books were selected** as a representative sample
covering different content
types: image-heavy novels, pure manga, light novels with broken images,
and text-dominant books.
Each was benchmarked on two devices running in parallel, one on `master`
and one
on `PR#1224` — measuring render time across ~30 pages per book on
average.

### Rendering bugs fixed

## Options

**Always active when the converter is enabled:**
- Converts PNG, WebP, BMP, GIF → baseline JPEG
- Smart downscaling to 480×800 px max (preserves aspect ratio)
- True grayscale for e-ink (BT.709 luminance, always on)
- SVG cover fix + OPF/NCX compliance repairs

**Advanced Mode (opt-in) — single file:**
- JPEG quality presets: 30% / 45% / 60% / 75% / **85%** (default) / 95%
- Rotation direction for split images: CW (default) / CCW
- Min overlap when splitting: 5% (default) / 10% / 15%
- Auto-download conversion log toggle (detailed stats per image)
- Per-image picker: set Normal / H-Split / V-Split / Rotate per image
individually,
  with "Apply to all" for bulk assignment

**Advanced Mode (opt-in) — batch (2+ files):**
- JPEG quality presets: 30% / 45% / 60% / 75% / **85%** (default) / 95%
- Auto-download conversion log toggle (aggregated stats for all files)

## ⚠️ Known limitations

**KoReader hash-based sync will break** for converted files. The file
content changes,
so the hash no longer matches the original. Filename-based sync is
unaffected.

If you rely on KoReader hash sync, use the Calibre plugin or the web
tool instead.

## Build size impact

| Metric | master (53beeee) | PR #1224 (a2ba5db) | Delta |

|---------------|------------------|--------------------|----------------|
| Flash used | 5,557 KB | 5,616 KB | +59 KB (+1.1%) |
| Flash free | 843 KB | 784 KB | −59 KB |
| Flash usage | 86.8% | 87.7% | +0.9 pp |
| RAM used | 95,156 B | 95,156 B | no change |

> Both builds compiled with `gh_release` environment in release mode
(ESP32-C3, 6,400 KB Flash).
> The +59 KB increase is entirely due to `jszip.min.js` embedded as a
> gzipped static asset served from Flash. RAM usage is identical,
> confirming no runtime overhead — the library runs in the browser,
> not on the ESP32. ~784 KB of Flash remain available.

---

## Alternatives considered

| Approach | Friction |
|----------|---------|
| **This PR** — integrated in upload flow | Zero: convert + upload in
one step, offline, any browser |
| Calibre plugin (in parallel development) | Requires a computer with
Calibre installed, same network |
| Web converters | Requires extra upload / download / transfer steps |

Zach Nelson c3f1dbfa09 perf: Avoid creating strings for file extension checks (#1303)
## Summary

**What is the goal of this PR?**

This change avoids the pattern of creating a `std::string` using
`.substr` in order to compare against a file extension literal.
```c++
std::string path;
if (path.length() >= 4 && path.substr(path.length() - 4) == ".ext")
```

The `checkFileExtension` utility has moved from StringUtils to
FsHelpers, to be available to code in lib/. The signature now accepts a
`std::string_view` instead of `std::string`, which makes the single
implementation reusable for Arduino `String`.

Added utility functions for commonly repeated extensions.

These changes **save about 2 KB of flash (5,999,427 to 5,997,343)**.

jpirnay 04242fa221 refactor: Simplify new setting introduction (#1086)
## Summary

* **What is the goal of this PR?** Eliminate the 3-file / 4-location
overhead for adding a new setting. Previously, every new setting
required manually editing JsonSettingsIO.cpp in two places (save +
load), duplicating knowledge already present in SettingsList.h. After
this PR, JsonSettingsIO.cpp never needs to be touched again for standard
settings.
* **What changes are included?**
* `SettingInfo` (in `SettingsActivity.h`) gains one new field: `bool
obfuscated` (base64 save/load for passwords), with a fluent builder
method `.withObfuscated()`. The previously proposed
`defaultValue`/`withDefault()` approach was dropped in favour of reading
the struct field's own initializer value as the fallback (see below).
* `SettingsList.h` entries are annotated with `.withObfuscated()` on the
OPDS password entry. The list is now returned as a `static const`
singleton (`const std::vector<SettingInfo>&`), so it is constructed
exactly once. A missing `key`/`category` on the
`statusBarProgressBarThickness` entry was also fixed — it was previously
skipped by the generic save loop, so changes were silently lost on
restart.
* `JsonSettingsIO::saveSettings` and `loadSettings` replace their ~90
lines of manual per-field code with a single generic loop over
`getSettingsList()`. The loop uses `info.key`,
`info.valuePtr`/`info.stringOffset`+`info.stringMaxLen` (for char-array
string fields), `info.enumValues.size()` (for enum clamping), and
`info.obfuscated`.
* **Default values**: instead of a duplicated `defaultValue` field in
`SettingInfo`, `loadSettings` reads `s.*(info.valuePtr)` *before*
overwriting it. Because `CrossPointSettings` is default-constructed
before `loadSettings` is called, this captures each field's struct
initializer value as the JSON-absent fallback. The single source of
truth for defaults is `CrossPointSettings.h`.
* One post-loop special case remains explicitly: the four `frontButton*`
remap fields (managed by the RemapFrontButtons sub-activity, not in
SettingsList) and `validateFrontButtonMapping()`.
* One pre-loop migration guard handles legacy settings files that
predate the status bar refactor: if `statusBarChapterPageCount` is
absent from the JSON, `applyLegacyStatusBarSettings()` is called first
so the generic loop picks up the migrated values as defaults and applies
its normal clamping.
* OPDS password backward-compat migration (plain `opdsPassword` →
obfuscated `opdsPassword_obf`) is preserved inside the generic
obfuscated-string path.

## Additional Context
Say we want to add a new `bookmarkStyle` enum setting with options
`DOT`, `LINE`, `NONE` and a default of `DOT`:

1. `src/CrossPointSettings.h` — add enum and member:
```cpp
enum BOOKMARK_STYLE { BOOKMARK_DOT = 0, BOOKMARK_LINE = 1, BOOKMARK_NONE = 2 };
uint8_t bookmarkStyle = BOOKMARK_DOT;
```

2. `lib/I18n/translations/english.yaml` — add display strings:
```yaml
STR_BOOKMARK_STYLE: "Bookmark Style"
STR_BOOKMARK_DOT: "Dot"
STR_BOOKMARK_LINE: "Line"
```
(Other language files will fall back to English if not translated. Run
`gen_i18n.py` to regenerate `I18nKeys.h`.)

3. `src/SettingsList.h` — add one entry in the appropriate category:
```cpp
SettingInfo::Enum(StrId::STR_BOOKMARK_STYLE, &CrossPointSettings::bookmarkStyle,
                  {StrId::STR_BOOKMARK_DOT, StrId::STR_BOOKMARK_LINE, StrId::STR_NONE_OPT},
                  "bookmarkStyle", StrId::STR_CAT_READER),
```

That's it — no default annotation needed anywhere, because
`bookmarkStyle = BOOKMARK_DOT` in the struct already provides the
fallback. The setting will automatically persist to JSON on save, load
with clamping on boot, appear in the device settings UI under the Reader
category, and be exposed via the web API — all with no further changes.

7ba5978848 feat: User-Interface I18n System (#728)
## Summary

**What is the goal of this PR?**
This PR introduces Internationalization (i18n) support, enabling users
to switch the UI language dynamically.

**What changes are included?**
- Core Logic: Added I18n class (`lib/I18n/I18n.h/cpp`) to manage
language state and string retrieval.

- Data Structures:

- `lib/I18n/I18nStrings.h/cpp`: Static string arrays for each supported
language.
  - `lib/I18n/I18nKeys.h`: Enum definitions for type-safe string access.
  - `lib/I18n/translations.csv`: single source of truth.

- Documentation: Added `docs/i18n.md` detailing the workflow for
developers and translators.

- New Settings activity:
`src/activities/settings/LanguageSelectActivity.h/cpp`

## Additional Context

This implementation (building on concepts from #505) prioritizes
performance and memory efficiency.

The core approach is to store all localized strings for each language in
dedicated arrays and access them via enums. This provides O(1) access
with zero runtime overhead, and avoids the heap allocations, hashing,
and collision handling required by `std::map` or `std::unordered_map`.

The main trade-off is that enums and string arrays must remain perfectly
synchronized—any mismatch would result in incorrect strings being
displayed in the UI.

To eliminate this risk, I added a Python script that automatically
generates `I18nStrings.h/.cpp` and `I18nKeys.h` from a CSV file, which
will serve as the single source of truth for all translations. The full
design and workflow are documented in `docs/i18n.md`.

### Next Steps

- [x] Python script `generate_i18n.py` to auto-generate C++ files from
CSV
- [x] Populate translations.csv with initial translations.

Currently available translations: English, Español, Français, Deutsch,
Čeština, Português (Brasil), Русский, Svenska.
Thanks, community!

**Status:** EDIT: ready to be merged.

As a proof of concept, the SPANISH strings currently mirror the English
ones, but are fully uppercased.

Xuan-Son Nguyen 5816ab2a47 feat: use pre-compressed HTML pages (#861)
## Summary

Pre-compress the HTML file to save flash space. I'm using `gzip` because
it's supported everywhere (indeed, we are using the same optimization on
[llama.cpp server](https://github.com/ggml-org/llama.cpp), our HTML page
is huge 😅 ).

This free up ~40KB flash space.

Some users suggested using `brotli` which is known to further reduce 20%
in size, but it doesn't supported by firefox (only supports if served
via HTTPS), and some reverse proxy like nginx doesn't support it out of
the box (unrelated in this context, but just mention for completeness)

jpirnayandXuan Son Nguyen cb24947477 feat: Add central logging pragma (#843)
## Summary

* Definition and use of a central LOG function, that can later be
extended or completely be removed (for public use where debugging
information may not be required) to save flash by suppressing the
-DENABLE_SERIAL_LOG like in the slim branch

* **What changes are included?**

## Additional Context
* By using the central logger the usual:
```
#include <HardwareSerial.h>
...
  Serial.printf("[%lu] [WCS] Obfuscating/deobfuscating %zu bytes\n", millis(), data.size());
```
would then become
```
#include <Logging.h>
...
  LOG_DBG("WCS", "Obfuscating/deobfuscating %zu bytes", data.size());
```
You do have ``LOG_DBG`` for debug messages, ``LOG_ERR`` for error
messages and ``LOG_INF`` for informational messages. Depending on the
verbosity level defined (see below) soe of these message types will be
suppressed/not-compiled.

* The normal compilation (default) will create a firmware.elf file of
42.194.356 bytes, the same code via slim will create 42.024.048 bytes -
170.308 bytes less
* Firmware.bin : 6.469.984 bytes for default, 6.418.672 bytes for slim -
51.312 bytes less

## Summary

This is an updated version of @itsthisjustin's #346 that builds on
current master and also deduplicates the settings list so we don't have
two copies of the settings. In the Web UI, it should organize the
settings a little closer to what you see on device.

## Additional Context

I tested this live on device and it seems to play nicely for me. It's
re-based on master since master's settings stuff has moved somewhat
since the original PR and addresses the sole review comment #346 - it
also means that I don't need to manually key in the URL for my OPDS

Xuan-Son Nguyen 7f40c3f477 feat: add HalStorage (#656)
## Summary

Continue my changes to introduce the HAL infrastructure from
https://github.com/crosspoint-reader/crosspoint-reader/pull/522

This PR touches quite a lot of files, but most of them are just name
changing. It should not have any impacts to the end behavior.

## Additional Context

My plan is to firstly add this small shim layer, which sounds useless at
first, but then I'll implement an emulated driver which can be helpful
for testing and for development.

Currently, on my fork, I'm using a FS driver that allow "mounting" a
local directory from my computer to the device, much like the `-v` mount
option on docker. This allows me to quickly reset `.crosspoint`
directory if anything goes wrong. I plan to upstream this feature when
this PR get merged.

* **What changes are included?**

New `/move` and `/rename` endpoints, and corresponding modals and icons
added. Uses the `file.rename()` function, after sanity checking.

## Additional Context

Fixes #559, #661, #663. Only touches the File Manager, so low risk of
affecting other systems.

Simpler than #619, at the cost of not migrating the cache of renamed
books.

Xuan-Son Nguyen db659f3ea2 fix: move http upload state to heap (#657)
## Summary

The main motivation behind this PR was because `uploadBuffer` is
statically allocated, but only used when web server is enabled. This
results in 4KB of memory sitting idle most of the time.

As expected, 4KB of initial RAM is freed with this PR:

```
master:
RAM:   [===       ]  32.5% (used 106508 bytes from 327680 bytes)
PR:
RAM:   [===       ]  31.2% (used 102276 bytes from 327680 bytes)
```

## Additional Context

This also highlights the importance of only using statically-allocated
buffer when absolutely needed (for example, if the component is active
most of the time). Otherwise, it makes more sense to tie the buffer's
life cycle to its activity.

3a761b18af Refactors Calibre Wireless Device & Calibre Library (#404)
Our esp32 consistently dropped the last few packets of the TCP transfer
in the old implementation. Only about 1/5 transfers would complete. I've
refactored that entire system into an actual Calibre Device Plugin that
basically uses the exact same system as the web server's file transfer
protocol. I kept them separate so that we don't muddy up the existing
file transfer stuff even if it's basically the same at the end of the
day I didn't want to limit our ability to change it later.

I've also added basic auth to OPDS and renamed that feature to OPDS
Browser to just disassociate it from Calibre.

Logan GarbariniandDave Allie d399afb53d feat: invalidate cache on web uploads and opds downloads and add Clear Cache action (#393)
## Summary

When uploading or downloading an updated ebook from SD/WebUI/OPDS with
same the filename the `.crosspoint` cache is not cleared. This can lead
to issues with the Table of Contents and hangs when switching between
chapters.

I encountered this issue in two places:
- When I need to do further ePub cleaning using Calibre after I load an
ePub and find that some of its formatting should be cleaned up. When I
reprocess the same book and want to place it back in the same location I
need a way to invalidate the cache.
- When syncing RSS feed generated epubs. I generate news ePubs with
filenames like `news-outlet.epub` and so every day when I fetch new news
the crosspoint cache needs to be cleared to load that file.

This change offers the following features:
- On web uploads, if the file already exists, the cache for that file is
cleared
- On OPDS downloads, if the file already exists, the cache for that file
is cleared
- There's now an action for `Clear Cache` in the Settings page which can
clear the cache for all books

swwilshubandClaude a946c83a07 Turbocharge WiFi uploads with WebSocket + watchdog stability (#364)
## Summary

* **What is the goal of this PR?** Fix WiFi file transfer stability
issues (especially crashes during uploads) and improve upload speed via
WebSocket binary protocol. File transfers now don't really crash as
much, if they do it recovers and speed has gone form 50KB/s to 300+KB/s.

* **What changes are included?**
- **WebSocket upload support** - Adds WebSocket binary protocol for file
uploads, achieving faster speeds 335 KB/s vs HTTP multipart)
- **Watchdog stability fixes** - Adds `esp_task_wdt_reset()` calls
throughout upload path to prevent watchdog timeouts during:
    - File creation (FAT allocation can be slow)
    - SD card write operations
    - HTTP header parsing
    - WebSocket chunk processing
- **4KB write buffering** - Batches SD card writes to reduce I/O
overhead
- **WiFi health monitoring** - Detects WiFi disconnection in STA mode
and exits gracefully
- **Improved handleClient loop** - 500 iterations with periodic watchdog
resets and button checks for responsiveness
- **Progress bar improvements** - Fixed jumping/inaccurate progress by
capping local progress at 95% until server confirms completion
- **Exit button responsiveness** - Button now checked inside the
handleClient loop every 64 iterations
- **Reduced exit delays** - Decreased shutdown delays from ~850ms to
~140ms

**Files changed:**
- `platformio.ini` - Added WebSockets library dependency
- `CrossPointWebServer.cpp/h` - WebSocket server, upload buffering,
watchdog resets
- `CrossPointWebServerActivity.cpp` - WiFi monitoring, improved loop,
button handling
- `FilesPage.html` - WebSocket upload JavaScript with HTTP fallback

## Additional Context

- WebSocket uses 4KB chunks with backpressure management to prevent
ESP32 buffer overflow
- Falls back to HTTP automatically if WebSocket connection fails
- The main bottleneck now is SD card write speed (~44% of transfer
time), not WiFi
- STA mode was more prone to crashes than AP mode due to external
network factors; WiFi health monitoring helps detect and handle
disconnections gracefully

Brendan O'Leary 9f4f71fabe Add AP mode option for file transfers (#98)
## Summary

* **What is the goal of this PR?** Adds WiFi Access Point (AP) mode
support for File Transfer, allowing the device to create its own WiFi
network that users can connect to directly - useful when no existing
WiFi network is available. And in my experience is faster when the
device is right next to your laptop (but maybe further from your wifi)

* **What changes are included?**
- New `NetworkModeSelectionActivity` - an interstitial screen asking
users to choose between:
- "Join a Network" - connects to an existing WiFi network (existing
behavior)
- "Create Hotspot" - creates a WiFi access point named
"CrossPoint-Reader"
  - Modified `CrossPointWebServerActivity` to:
    - Launch the network mode selection screen before proceeding
- Support starting an Access Point with mDNS (`crosspoint.local`) and
DNS server for captive portal behavior
    - Display appropriate connection info for both modes
- Modified `CrossPointWebServer` to support starting when WiFi is in AP
mode (not just STA connected mode)

## Additional Context

* **AP Mode Details**: The device creates an open WiFi network named
"CrossPoint-Reader". Once connected, users can access the file transfer
page at `http://crosspoint.local/` or `http://192.168.4.1/`
* **DNS Captive Portal**: A DNS server redirects all domain requests to
the device's IP, enabling captive portal behavior on some devices
* **mDNS**: Hostname resolution via `crosspoint.local` is enabled for
both AP and STA modes
* **No breaking changes**: The "Join a Network" option preserves the
existing WiFi connection flow
* **Memory impact**: Minimal - the AP mode uses roughly the same
resources as STA mode
